Cosplay Plans & Goals for 2016

Hey All! So last year I sort of fell into doing more of a “Con Circuit” than ever before, and this year I’m actually planning it. I  missed Heroes & Villains last week, but I’m going to the reschedule in July. I already have my room in Atlantic City for ACBC, I’m planning on Special Edition again and I’m going out of my way to get to NYCC this year. There may be another small con or so tucked in there, but I’ll make those choices as they come up.

But the planned 4 Cons requires Cosplay galore. Obviously, the loss of Fanfest is a blow, but I’ll find more plans what I’m planning on working on for the next year or so (Repeats very possible)

  • Jessica Jones
    • Status: Finished
    • Comfort Level: Super High! Seriously, this costume is a tee shirt, jeans, a leather jacket and a black wig. It’s my new favorite costume!
  • Resistance X-Wing Pilot
    • Status: SOOO CLOSE to finished
    • Comfort level: OK. There are a lot of components to this costume. But I love it, and I’m really proud of it, it’s a for sure choice for ACBC
  • Original Victorian/Steampunk Character (I need a name for her, and MAYBE a back story)
    • Status: Finished! The origin of this costume is very fun. Juli is getting married (YAY!) and her bachelorette party is a Sherlock Holmes murder mystery weekend, and one of the nights she wants us to get dressed up. I literally only needed to order a corset to convert a couple of normal clothes and costume pieces I had to a decent Victorian look, so I did that. Switch the long skirt up to either a short skirt of leggings (I haven’t decided) and BOOM awesome Steampunk look.
    • Comfort level: As I lose weight I hope that this will be more comfortable, but as it is, it’s pretty damn comfy.
    • IMG_1752

There’s also a bustle, but it’s stored and I didn’t feel like pulling it out…

  • Bombshell Supergirl
    • A Far off dream…
    • Comfort Level: Couldn’t tell you. Seriously, I badly want to do this costume. But it’s very contingent on how much weight I lose by August. (I need that much time to get it ready for NYCC)
  • Sailor Mars
    • I’ve been talking about this for almost two years now…so, yeah.
    • Comfort Level: Again so much depends on my weight loss. I want it to be clear, I’m not body shaming ANYONE who decides they can rock a costume when they’re carrying a few extra pounds. I admire that confidence. I do not have it. And because this would be a fully purchased costume that costs like, a good chunk of change…it’s more a motivating factor than anything else. “If I lose the weight, I’ll order and have tailored a Sailor Mars costume for NYCC”

So that’s what I’m thinking for now. I for sure think that I’m going bring Black Canary and Rose Tyler back around. Mostly because I didn’t wear Rose enough (and invested a lot in it.) and Black Canary is my reward for keeping on track weight loss wise. (Seriously, I can’t wear that costume unless I feel FIERCE and at my current weight, I DO NOT.) If I’m not comfortable enough for Canary than Ramona Flowers makes the cut.

ACBC, Special Edition And Why Small Cons are My New Jam

Two years ago I walked with a great deal of excitement and trepidation into New York Comic Con. I’d always been wary of Cons even if I was curious, and as I’ve previously stated, would take any chance to wear a costume.

I had a great time and went back and had an even better time my second year at NYCC. And, having a bit more disposable income these days, I decided to expand out. (And being locked out from NYCC this year, at least initially helped this decision along.)

So as I drove down the New Jersey Parkway to get to Atlantic City for the first ever Atlantic City Boardwalk Con, I was nervous, for a lot of reasons. I’d never been to a smaller con, where the general pop culture loving, band wagon jumping nerds created a safer space, and also, I was heading into battle without my con slaying partner, since Aless was busy (she was graduating from college that week, as if that were more important! I’m kidding of course, super proud of you my dear!) What followed was one of the most fun weekends of my life, completely with getting to ask a question of one of my heroes, and talking to a bunch of new people.

I was energized heading this weekend into Special Edition NYC, which incidentally, I also attended alone. (Though I at least one person who was going to be there! Hi John! Hope you had a good weekend.) I was prepared to chat with other con attendees and creators. I was nervous about walking around New York City in cosplay without the buffer of, you know, another person in cosplay with me, but I was excited.

Not twenty minutes into my wanderings around Pier 94, I was approached by a group of guys dressed as various DC Characters and recruited into the DC Cosplay photo shoot later in the day. While milling around waiting I met another girl dressed as Black Canary and her friend as Catwoman (They were the bombshell versions and it was great…Hi Jen and Jess, if you’re reading). I went out after the show and talked to and met people. I exchanged cards, and flirted with guys. I danced, I drank. I had the time of my life.

On Sunday, I sat and listened to Brian Michael Bendis talk about his life influencing his work and vice versa, I shopped for gifts for

Few if any of these things happened at NYCC. Yes, I talked to people on lines, but my socializing was limited to people I already knew for the most part. I’m finding at these smaller conventions, everyone’s having the same experiences, and everything’s more intimate and a little bit lighter. I’ll still do my very best to hit the big boys. And I still dream of San Diego, I just want to see it some day. But for now I’m looking for my next small to mid size show.

I’m leaning towards this one. Anyone else in?

Sailor Moon Check In: Where Do We Go From Here?

This is a big Sailor Moon week, as all “Three weeks between Crystal episode” weeks are. Because there are more classic episodes to watch and reminding myself what happened before stuff and all kinds of other issues. (But watching 3 episodes of S and an episode of Crystal while chilling in my hotel room in NYC this weekend was so delightfully lovely.)

Sailor Moon

Manga

LOLZ…considered buying it at the Midtown Comics Booth this weekend. Realized I’d already spent WAYYY too much money. Did buy a Kindle Fire this week though (I’m trying to minimize crap, thus having a portable device for reading graphic work = GOOD)

The Best Cartoon Ever Sorry Korra

OK, so before I watch this week’s episode I just want to talk about that finale, and Uranus and Neptune A)realizing that they were in love with each other. B) No one recognizing Pluto…except Chibi-Usa because BFFL transcends space time and super hero secret identity suspension of disbelief. B)THEY ALL HAVE PURE HEART TALISMANS (talismen?) and it’s so beautiful and now we have the holy grail.

After an episode or two of everyone just sort of pushing through not trusting one another it was a really, really nice resolution to that arc.

And the new arc started. And we met Hotaru. (YAY!) And we found out her father was the professor. (Which I knew, due to having read the Manga!) And Usagi is now Sailor Super Moon, and that costume is awesome. I love this incarnation of the show so much!

Crystal

Sigh, filler. I mean, it’s a little bit not. But we literally had five minutes of transformation sequences. I’ve forgiven most of Crystals pacing problems because you know, shiny, but this was ridiculous. Also Dark Lady, who’s kind of really, really gross, but I’m considering cosplaying her. (I actually have a dress that would work, though I don’t know how it would fit these days, and actually my black canary vest over it would work…this idea is coming together now…)

Look, the episode was basically made by Diana assuring King Endymion that everything was going to be fine, because that is the most adorable thing in the world. The cats so often make everything better. Also, Saphir has definitely caught on that, like Wise Man is not a good dude. Or at least, not the level of bad dude that they want.

Other Stuff

I was at a con! I saw some cosplayers. As brainstormed above I might start cosplaying some things. We’ll see. I also resisted buying roughly all of the Sailor Moon art I saw, but I did by a Sailor Chibi Moon Bookmark.

Special Edition NYC

special-edition-nyc

Hey everybody! I’m headed to Special Edition this weekend.

Let me know if you’re going to be there, on facebook is probably the best way!

I’m excited about the show! On Saturday I’m dressing as Black Canary and Sunday I’m doing Ramona Flowers. I’m really excited because I recently cut all of my hair off which means that I’m now not going to have to spend twenty minutes plus getting into the wig.

As for Ramona, well, I mean, what nerd girl doesn’t want to be her right? So for a few hours I’ll get to be. (Also my new haircut suits her, I just have to spray color it pink or blue, I haven’t decided yet!)

So if you’re going to be there, well, I hope you say hey! Or if you’re just finding it because I gave you a card or something, Welcome to my little world.

And The Living Is Easy

It’s officially summer.

Well, not officially, but as far as any conventional measurement goes…

My daily walks have given me enough color that I don’t feel ghosty pale anymore…I’m ready for beach time, though I don’t know when it’s going to come.

I sometimes long for the summers of school time, when your life would slow down. Now it seems like everything goes crazy at summer time. This is partially because Tomfoolery Theatre, the group I help run, does it’s main work in the summer. (Auditions were this week! So, there’s that.)

Put here’s a (brief) look at what I have coming up in the next few months:

Summer Movie Season Trudges On:

I’m hoping to get to either Mad Max: Fury Road or Aloha this weekend. Next weekend Entourage is hitting, and I’ve decided to be unapologetically excited about that, followed by Jurassic World and Inside Out, which then lends itself to a nice little break before Terminator: Genysis (I need to find a minute to rewatch the first two Terminator movies…)

Special Edition NYC!

That’s next weekend. I have a hotel room, I have costume plans. I’m really excited and nervous. I had a ball at ACBC but I’ve also pretty much given up weekly comics reading, because I got really far behind and also because there have been so many good books coming out lately (Prose books) and I don’t have unlimited reading time, so something’s got to give. (I’m currently working through Gumption: Relighting The Torch Of Freedom by Nick Offerman. Hilarious. And educational. I admire this man so much.) But I’m looking forward to it. Since I’ve decided to jettison NYCC in favor of Disney World this year. (Where I will be, exhausted, dehydrated, and waiting in line a bunch. Seriously, it’s 80% the same activities) this is (probably) my last con this year. I’m comfortable with the decision…I think.

Usual Stuff

Obviously, Game Of Thrones will continue, and I’m about to launch into season 3 of Kim Possible and Sailor Moon seems like an endless trove of joyous pretty colors and glitter. (Seriously, I’m trying to figure out how much original anime I have left and my Google-fu is failing me…does anyone know what Hulu’s deal with the movies is going to be? I mean, I assume they’ll be there, since we’ve been promised “full and unabridged.”)

Life Things

My sister’s boyfriend Joe graduated from college! So we’re celebrating that. A couple of my cousins also graduated from college and high school and what not, so there will be celebrations of that. Plus work, and trying to write things that aren’t this blog.

But I swear, I will get to a beach. I will do it soon! (Or possibly in August, when all of this stuff is done.)

Happy Summer Everyone!
