Do Or Do Not, I Know, I am Your Father

Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back is largely regarded as the best of all the Star Wars movies. I quibble with that. (I have very strong feelings about A New Hope) But it’s a very good movie, and I always enjoy watching it.

Let’s dive in!

  • Luke is a Commander now. Way to get promoted Luke. He’s also been continuing his Jedi training somehow…instinct? Those holograms that Kanaan and Ahsoka used to teach Ezra? Kanaan or Ezra themselves???? (SHUT UP THIS IS MY HEADCANON!)
  • Obi-Wan’s force ghost shows up. Hello first Force-Ghost!
  • Han and Leia have a thing going on. It develops into a full on love affair. She finally says she loves him as he’s about to be frozen in carbonite. He responds with “I know.” Women everywhere fall on the floor.
  • Speaking of swooning, we meet Lando Calrissian, smoothest opperator in the whole dang galaxy.
  • Luke goes to Dagobah to train with Yoda. Yoda has, kind of lost in seventeen years of exile. He’s still a badass, but he’s on the bonkers side. He and Obi-Wan have some force ghost chats.
  • Luke faces a phantom version of Darth Vader in a cave. When he strikes it down, his own face is revealed inside the mask. FORESHADOWING!
  • Vader is looking for Luke, and decides the best way to find him is by torturing his friends. I assume he comes up with this plan because you know, it’s what he, Anakin Skywalker would do.
  • Luke goes to Cloud City to save Leia and Han, thus falling into Vader’s trap. Vader cut’s off his hand, reveals that he’s his father, and that he has a plan to overthrow the emperor together. (Anakin is BAD AT PLANS. Vader is SLIGHTLY BETTER AT THEM, but this one seems not so great.)
  • Yoda eludes to another who could help with the whole restarting the Jedi bussiness. (This means Leia.)
  • While Leia and Han are on the run, they are pursued by bounty hunters, including one Boba Fett. I wonder, does Vader recognize Boba as the brother clone of his former troops?
  • This is also the first instance of Wedge Antilles! (WEDGE!) And the use of the “Rogue” call sign (ROGUE!)

Running To Stand Still

Hey everyone! Hope you all had a great New Year’s and that if you’re the resolution type you’ve gotten a good start on yours.

I have a couple but the most important one is that I’m starting running again. In my second senior year I ran nearly everyday and didn’t eat between meals and didn’t drink beer and lost 30 pounds. I’m hoping to do that again, because I actually need to lose 40 pounds to be where I was at that time, but I can live with having 10 more pounds on me than I did when I was 22. Seriously. I’m OK with it.

But I’m running again, every other day I head to Retro Fitness get on a treadmill and run for about 40 minutes (including cooldown.) Now, for me the most important part of running is my playlist, because if it isn’t right I’ll get bored and slow down instinctively. My current running playlist is increasingly epic and completely embarrassing. I should note that I don’t listen to it in this order. I put it on shuffle:

  • Stronger – Britney Spears: Because you know what, I am stronger, than yesterday. It’s nothing but my way. Honestly Britney is great running music because it’s like 30% bass.
  • The Edge of Glory – Lady Gaga: Again with that bass. I am all about it. (Not on the playlist)
  • Roar – Katy Perry: The white girl work out anthem! We require this song to exercise. I also sometimes start punching the air when this comes on. Like I said this is embarrassing.
  • Straight Outta Compton – NWA: Sometimes I’ll be getting ready to quit and go right into cool down because I am very lazy and I’ll hear simply “You are not about to witness the strength of street knowledge.” And I go. I keep going, because I am also a crazy mutha fucka from the streets (I am absolutely not that at all.)
  • Brand New You – The Broadway Cast of 13: This song isn’t even in the show, it was cut and then sung as an encore. But it’s wonderful. And I put it on most playlists because of how much fun it is.
  • American Girl – Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Another White Kid motivational song. We like this one. Mostly for driving but it works for running too.
  • The Call – Backstreet Boys: This is their best song and also it just moves, and has no weird slow breakdown like most of their songs, thus making it great for running.
  • No Surrender – Bruce Springsteen: NO RETREAT  BABY!
  • No Apologies – Empire Cast: Uhhh…how did that get here…no just kidding. In case you need to feel motivated ever having Jussie Smollet shout-sing “I’m a loose canon!” will do it. Also, you can just blame it on Tiana!
  • Song For The Lonely – Cher: Look, you’re standing on the edge of nowhere, there’s only one way out and your heart’s gotta go there. I just love this song a lot.
  • The Bitch Is Back – Elton John: Another good come back song. And while I am not “stone cold sober as a matter of fact” all of the other lyrics pertain quite well to me.
  • Ease on Down The Road – Shanice Williams & Elijah Kelley: Oh come on, I’m trying to motivate myself and there are definitely times when I wish I wasn’t born, and I KNOW the Shanice and Elijah version being here instead of Diana and Michael is kind of a terrible blasphemy , but I adore the purity of Shanice’s voice.
  • The Schuyler Sisters – Hamilton: Look, I could probably just run to the Hamilton Cast Album (and when I start doing longer outdoor runs in the spring I have every intention of it) but when I had to choose just one song for the short runs, well, it had to be this one. Among other things it literally reminds you to “work” every third line about.
  • Main Title and Attack On the Jakku Village – John Willaims Star Wars: The Force Awakens: I picked this opening so I can think about Oscar Isaacs being adorable while I run. That is the only reason it isn’t the version from Episode III which is actually the most motivating post opening theme piece.

So that’s what I’m listening too while I run! For now, I’ll be shifting things into and out of the list. I want to keep it at about 50 minutes, which is why “Mercy” by Duffy is already gone (I also just kind of got sick of it.)

And I’m not running for no reason. I’ve decided that the only way to keep myself motivated is to give myself a final goal. And that goal???? I’m doing a RunDisney event either late this year or in 2017. Depending on how my training goes I may go for the full marathon, but I’m more likely to do one of the half marathons or 10ks. Whether I do Disney World or Disneyland will depend on timing. I figured this was a good way to get myself motivated and to get my ass back to Disney! (or to California for the first time ever!)

TV Time

So, I was hoping to finish X-Files season 2 for today. That wound up not happening, so let’s do a quick trip down into what I’m going to be watching this TV season. (Not always live, also I already have a couple of premiers to catch up on, obviously.)

Sunday

Once Upon a Time 8PM ABC

I’ll be live tweeting this whenever possible, and I’m really excited for it to come back next week. I mean, really, really, excited. I’m excited for the Dark Swan arc, I’m excited to meet Merida, I’m excited that Mulan is finally coming back. I’m just excited.

Brooklyn 99 8:30 PM Fox

This will be a DVR choice, but again, just can’t wait for it to be back, and to hang out with the 99th Precinct again. I want to know how Captain Holt is going to get back. Because he will get back. He has to. And Bill Hader! Also great!

Blood and Oil 9 PM ABC

Guys, Chase Crawford is going to be back on my TV brooding. This show might be terrible, but I will watch all of it. Because Chase Crawford will be back brooding on my TV.

Monday

Gotham 8 PM Fox

Well, this is back. Apparently this season is called “Rise of The Villains” which could be worse. I guess this means that we’re not going to go back to the Circus and check in on John and Mary Grayson and presumambly their son, at this point, huh? That’s a bummer. Anyway, I’ll also be live tweeting this, at least for the first few weeks…because then along comes

Supergirl 8PM CBS

Supergirl is exciting. Supergirl is important. Supergirl will fix everything. OK, it also might really suck, and it probably won’t fix everything. But, the fact the CBS and DC TV are understanding that young women are probably a big deal as a demographic and are making a show for them is a big deal. And I will live tweet this. The choice between this and Gotham comes down to which one is more fun to live tweet. Which will probably be Gotham, because snark is sooo easy and fun on twitter.

Tuesday

The Mindy Project Whenever, Hulu

The premiere already hit and I need to watch it. I’m just glad I get another season. I mean, the show has never been as great as it could be, but it deserves a final wrap up and I’m interested in seeing what happens with the baby.

The Muppets 8 PM ABC

THE MUPPETS ARE BACK ON TV! Every time I see a preview I start singing “Hello Dolly” in my head. I don’t care,  I don’t care. It’s going to be beautiful and wonderful, and a new generation of people are going to fall in love with comedy through the Muppets. It’s the best way for children to fall in love with comedy.

Scream Queens 8PM Fox

If Ryan Murphy can do anything it’s one season of high camp. So I will watch one season of Scream Queens, and then a second season and complain about how it’s just not as good. Because seriously, the man does not know how to execute a second season. Also, Jamie Lee Curtis and Nasim Pedrad. (Calling it now that I think JLC is the killer.)

The Flash 8 PM The CW

Multiverse.

That is all.

Agents of SHIELD 9 PM ABC

Look, Secret Warriors are coming. Skye is officially Quake, and it’s quite likely that Melinda and Andrew are going to get back together. Also, WHERE DID GEMMA GO? Anyway, obviously I will be watching and live tweeting this.

Grandfathered 9 PM Fox

I like Fox Comedy. I really do, and I find John Stamos incredibly watchable and great. Which is all a round about way of saying this may not be a good show, but I’ll still watch it.

The Grinder 9 PM Fox

Hey, Rob Lowe is going to have his own sitcom. “Cool, I’m going to watch that.” He’s playing a washed up TV lawyer who decides to be a real lawyer. “Oh, fun concept, that seems to be a good fit for him.” Fred Savage is going to be on it too. “AWESOME, I love Fred Savage! Who doesn’t? I mean, he’s great.” They’re playing brothers. “Excuse me?” Yeah, and Fred is a real lawyer in their family practice. “SHUT UP AND LET ME WATCH THIS SHOW ALREADY!”

Wednesday

The Middle 8 PM ABC

I’ve been watching The Middle since the beginning and I’m not going to stop now. It always makes me giggle. Also, my mom loves it and she watches Gotham for me, so I give her this.

Arrow 8 PM The CW

We’re going to Coast City and we better meet Hal Jordan and Ollie and Felicity are a couple, and Malcolm is R’as Al Ghul and OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG.

The Goldbergs 8:30 PM ABC

The Goldbergs should annoy me but it doesn’t, it’s just really, really funny, and smart and optimistic and loving. So I watch. Because happy comedy is good comedy.

Modern Family 9 PM ABC

I will watch until the bitter end, which at this point, may be in like 20 years. But I don’t care, I’ll be watching.

Empire 9 PM Fox

Everybody shut up. Empire is on.

blackish 9:30 PM ABC

The ABC comedy block is very good, and blackish is the best part of it. I would watch this show even Tracey Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson were terrible, which they aren’t, because the kids are so great.

Thursday

Heroes Reborn 8 PM NBC

The only NBC show that I’m watching this year. But at least I haven’t completely abandoned my once beloved Peacock. I’ve been catching the odd old Heroes episode, because my brother has been re-watching it. (I don’t have room for another rewatch at the moment.) Anyway, I’m excited to see Noah Bennett and Hiro again. And hey, Zach Levi! I like him!

Scandal 9 PM ABC

EVERYBODY SHUT THE HELL UP SCANDAL IS ON!!!!!!!!!!!! II think it’s important that we remember that no matter what, we’ll all be gladiators until we die.

Friday

I don’t have anything on Friday, which means, I’ll either be going to the movies or working on my DVR.

Saturday

Doctor Who 9PM BBC America

I still have to watch the premier, but I’m actually excited to watch the new series. I’m very excited for Maisie Williams and for more of Missy, quite obviously.

The OMG YAY and WTF NO moments of the Empire Finale

Empire

So last night was the season 1 finale of Empire, it was two hours long and it was awesome, but for every triumphant OMG YAY! moment that hit there was a mirror WTF NO! moment to go with it because this is TV soap opera and it’s delightful.

  • OMG YAY! Cookie and Malcolm go to the Berkshires and hook up and it’s awesome. He’s so in love with her, and she thinks he’s like super hot, you guys, and also she’s only ever had sex with Lucious, which is sweet, but kills my theory that Puma is actually Hakeem’s father. WTF NO! Lucious finds out and fires Cookie and then Malcolm moves to DC, and Cookie refuses to go with him, because she can’t abandoned the boys.
  • OMG YAY! Snoop Dogg! Hakeem gets to perform with him, which cements the fact that Hakeem is the luckiest little SOB ever. During a freestyle with Snoop and Titan, Hakeem stands up to Lucious and calls him out for being a terrible human being. Then Lucious punches Hakeem in the face. WTF No! Hakeem decides to deflect to Creedmoor, because of his father being terrible. Also he has sex with Anika, because his Mommy issues exploded.
  • OMG YAY! Andre found Jesus! WTF No! Andre left Rhonda for Jennifer Hudson (Michelle? I think her name is)
  • OMG YAY! Cookie brings her sister to New York. There is no WTF No! on this, it’s pure gold.
  • OMG YAY! Lucious and Jamal go to their old house in Philadelphia and write a song together. Lucious is totally OK with Jamal’s gayness now, at least on the surface. Jamal is so happy because he just wanted his father to love him. WTF NO! Jamal takes Lucious’s side over Cookie after Cookie tries to smother Lucious with a pillow. Also, he’s pretty not cool to his brothers.
  • OMG YAY! Lucious was misdiagnosed and doesn’t have ALS. WTF NO! Lucious is no longer dying. This leads to his “the worst” behavior going all over the place.
  • OMG YAY! Lucious confesses to killing Bunkie in his sleep and Cookie considers smothering him with a pillow. WTF No! Cookie does not smother Lucious with a pillow. He totally deserves it.
  • OMG YAY! Ryan and Jamal are totally a thing. WTF No! Ryan and Jamal are totally a thing.
  • OMG YAY! Lucious gives Empire over to Jamal in a ridiculous gift ceremony, where he gives Hakeem a plane, I think? And Andre like, Jesus, or whatever? WTF No! Andre, Hakeem, Anika and Cookie organize a hostile take over, because, now that he’s in charge Jamal is being kind of a huge dick about everything.
  • OMG YAY! Patti LaBelle! WTF No! No Tiana
  • OMG YAY! Agent Carter (not THAT Agent Carter) asks Cookie to testify against Lucious. She says no. Vernon comes back, he says yes! OMG No! Vernon goes to talk to Andre and they fight and Rhonda kills Vernon to protect Andre
  • OMG YAY! Cooke and Anika have a cat fight. No WTF NO to go with that. It was sublime
  • OMG YAY! RHONDA IS PREGNANT! WTF NO! Rhonda killed Vernon
  • OMG YAY! Cookie and Jamal make up, because of course they do. They’re Cookie and Jamal, they are the best part of this whole damn show. WTF No! Jamal is really sad when Lucious is put in prison. For some reason.
  • OMG YAY! We already know there’ll be a season 2. WTF No! We have no idea when, or how long it will be.

I’m so glad that this show exists, that it’s a hit and that everyone I know who watches it loves it as much as I do.

Things I’m Obsessed With Right Now: Guys it’s SO COLD

So I know I was supposed to write about Sailor Moon today, but I was out in the city last night, so instead I’m doing things I’m obsessed with right now! Here we go!

  • New Cosplay that I’m working on! I’m planning for the conventions (yes that’s a plural!) that I’m going to this year. I plan on doing what’s called in the Doctor Who fandom as “50’s Rose,” which is the adorable bobbi soxer outfit that Rose wears in the episode “The Idiot Box.” I have the dress. I need to figure out the jacket and hair and I’m there, and I’m really excited about it.
  • Empire. I love it sooooooo much you guys. I love the music, I love the characters, I love the ridiculous story lines. I loooovvvveee Cookie. Who doesn’t love Cookie? She’s amazing. Taraji P. Henson is amazing. Just, amazing. “What do you do Yoko? DO YOU PLAY THE TAMBOURINE?” I might just start saying this to people in my life, for no reason. Also Jamal came out. And sang an adorable song with child-who-might-be-his-daughter-but-probably-isn’t-because-come-on-guys-really? Also Andre? So crazy! Right? And it turns out Hakeem has feelings and isn’t the worst. Wow. Good for Hakeem. I could keep going. This post could basically be all about Empire.
  • A new podcast! Tales From The Jungle Crews, where a guy who used to work on The Jungle Cruise at Disneyland interviews other people who used to work for The Jungle Cruise and it is fascinating and awesome and you wouldn’t expect it to be, but it’s really cool.
  • Talking about how cold it is. Look, if you’re not in the Northeast, you’re probably sick about hearing it. It’s not even that cold anymore, but before yesterday, it was so cold. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW COLD IT WAS!
  • Listening to songs from Empire. Even if you don’t watch the show listen to “No Apologies,” and “You’re So Beautiful,” and also maybe “Drip Drop.” Or just watch Empire. WATCH EMPIRE!
  • Editing my manuscript. I’ve rewritten nearly 20 pages now. It’s terrible. I hate it. But I’m invested enough to keep going. Which counts as an obsession…I guess.
  • Choosing what Cons I want to go to this year. Obviously, I’m going to New York Comic Con. There’s no question there. That’s my con. I know I’ve only gone twice, but I still feel protective of it. I might go to Special Edition New York as well, that’ll be a little more last minute. I’m also looking at Atlantic City Boardwalk Con, and Dragoncon in Atlanta…that’s going to come down to money. (Believe it or not, Atlanta might be cheaper because I have family there to stay with…pretty much, I need someone to split the hotel room with me in Atlantic City to make it worth it…Anyone want to go with me? Split a room? Let me know.)
  • Taraji P. Henson. And Empire. Have I mentioned that I’m obsessed with Empire?

So that’s where I’m at these days. Enjoy your obsessions! I know I’m enjoying mine.

Empire State of Mind

Empire

It’s here you guys. Finally.

At last a new show has risen up to fill the Smash shaped hole in my heart. And by “finally,” I mean, right on time, about two years later. Empire is going to be the one to do it, I just know it.

It’s about a Hip Hop label, Empire Records, founded by Lucious Lyon, played by Terrance Howard. Luscious has been diagnosed with ALS and before he dies he wants to be sure that one of his three sons can rise up and lead the company. Andre, the savvy business man, who probably should be running things, but isn’t an artist or public face, Hakeem, who’s a gifted rapper but lacks vision and focus, and Jamal, who is the best musician of the group. but who’s homosexuality isn’t accepted by his father and is considered a marketing problem.

Oh, and there’s Cookie, the boy’s mother, who’s just out of jail and ready to take what’s hers, since it was her drug money that started the company to begin with. She’s played masterfully by Taraji P. Henson, who I completely adore.

There’s a lot more to this show and I’m excited to see where it goes, plus the music is being done by Timbaland (WHAT!) and just a boatload of talent behind and in front of the camera. (Cuba Gooding Jr. is going to show up at some point. Gabourey Sidebe is just going to be around!)

“So why is this and not Nashville taking the place of my beloved mess?” You might ask, if you are my friend Sumona or my cousins Grace and Maren, who have been trying to get me to watch Nashville since the beginning. Well, mostly because I still haven’t gotten around to catching up on Nashville, though I probably will soon, and also, the talent thing.

Part of what made Smash so appealing to me was that it featured real Broadway talent to tell it’s story. Also Empire is telling a family story and I love nothing more than large sprawling dysfunctional family soap operas. (I’m looking at you, One Tree Hill and by season 3 Gossip Girl)  So, I’m just generally on board with this show and it’s premise.

A few details on my end.

I’m Team Jamal. I love him. I love his adorable boyfriend and his sweet piano ballads. I love that’s he’s clearly Cookie’s favorite child, because he’s the only one who contacted her while she was in prison. But the show is trying really hard to make you Team Jamal. I also sympathize with Andre, who’s worked really hard and is probably the most qualified to run the business. I don’t really want Hakeem to get it, although would totally be cool with him as the face and Andre as the brains. I don’t see why this can’t be an option, besides the fact that Hakeem is kind of a douche bag.
