Costume Season 2018: September Part 3: HUZZAH! To the days of Yore…

There are few things I love like the New York Renaissance Faire. (The PA Renaissance Faire, is one of them, but I don’t think I’ll make it down there this year…sadly…)

But, New York this year was one of the best outings I’ve ever had at the Faire, which was largely about the company.

Wenches

Why yes, we are 70% Disney Princesses…

I started the Disney cascade, because I decided I wanted to dress up as Ariel in her “Kiss The Girl,” getup.

It’s a white underdress, a black corset and a blue maxi skirt.

There was a lot of fun having, dancing, shouting of “huzzah,” and making of puns.

Also Katie making me take pictures next to water.

“Smile! Stop looking like you’re annoyed at me!” – Katie

So that was September in costumes! This weekend in New York Comic Con.

I’m only going to the con one day, but I may be going out both tonight and Saturday, so I’ll be dressed! See y’all around

Cosplay Corner: Han Solo Casual Cosplay

I haven’t done a casual cosplay in a while. I don’t mean Disney Bounds, which sometimes are casual cosplays, I mean actually putting together something that looks like something the character actually wears.

Which is why I went for Han Solo today, since I’m seeing Solo: A Star Wars Story tonight! YAY!

Han Solo

Also because it’s pretty easy. Jeans, boots, white tee shirt and a black leather vest that borrowed from Mary’s closet. (You can’t be mad, because you clearly are not using it as you left it in New Jersey and you live in Colorado)

I’m ready to go. (Also I’m real psyched for this movie. Which worries me…I don’t want to be let down.)

Cosplay Corner: Dapper Day Disneybound Figment

OK, so this is truly the last you’ll hear about this Disney trip, and it’s not about the trip quite so much as one of my outfits on it.

Hooray!

Anyway, planning Dapper Bounds is easily my favorite part of Dapper Day weekends. (To the point that I’m considering going down for Fall again…if I can swing it…just because of the Animal Kingdom outing…swoon)

And while my Figment bound is an achievement in both ‘bounding and just in general Disney Park nerdery, as Figment be crazy obscure, y’all, I was mostly happy with how nice it looked and how comfortable it was.

img_5224

The dress is a cotton poly blend, purchased from Amazon, which is also where the belt came from. The crinoline, which is bright orange and probably won’t have any other uses…came from Wish.

Seriously, Wish.com, it’s been incredible to me these past few costume seasons.

I wore my hair in my now kind of signature (whatever, let me have this delusion) Usagi style pigtail buns, as it’s gets my, too long for it’s own good (but I love it) hair off my neck, and gave a nice nod to Figment’s horns. I added the bows for cuteness. I also wore my saddle shoes. (For my effusive ode to saddle shoes, see my Cinderella ‘bound post)

Coming up in Cosplay Corner…A Han Solo casual cosplay, the return of Wonder Girl, Ren Faire prep, and a possible jaunt of the Enterprise. Who’s excited?

Cosplay Corner: Disneybound March Challenge: Week 5

I did it! Kind of! I cut some corners, but for the most part, I did it! I participated in the challenge and it was mostly fun. It actually got stressful towards the end, but still.

Challenge

March 28th

Theme: Disney Cats

Character: Marie

Marie

So I was between 2 for this one, and I decided on Marie, (because Juli wanted to do Aristocats) and I had the perfect outfit for it anyway. Thankfully, for a change, the weather actually cooperated. HUZZAH! The white dress is from last easter, and the pink shrug, from, I don’t know when, but it’s one of my favorite spring pieces. The statement necklace I wore to my cousin Tommy’s wedding and here we are!

Marie bound

March 29th

Theme: Disney Princes

Character: Prince Eric

Eric

To go with my Ariel bound from a few weeks ago (and tribute to my Prince Eric, who I swear does have a personality, I just haven’t gotten around to showing much of it yet.) So, I’m wearing jeans and a flowy blouse. This felt a little like cheating, but it did the trick. I was also wearing over the knee boots but you can’t see those in the picture!

Eric bound

March 30th

Theme: Vintage Inspiration

Character: Snow White

img_3281

I didn’t acutally wear this again. But it’s still my favorite bound I’ve ever done. So I felt the need to post it as a throwback. Yellow circle skirt, blue tank top, red belt! So simple, so perfect!

March 31st

Theme: A Character You’ve Never Bounded

Character: Skipped

I skipped the last day. I was at Once On This Island and couldn’t come up with a brand new bound that was also theater appropriate. I was wearing a tropical looking maxi dress though, so I was at least in theme to my surroundings!

General Thoughts On the Challenge

While I’m glad I did this challenge, I don’t know that I’d do it again. It was a lot of work and organization and I got kind of tired of it by the end. But it did remind me of when I went back to college after taking time off and Katie used to call me every day and ask what I was wearing and if I was able to describe the outfit she knew I was doing OK. (Seriously, get yourself such a best friend) Mindfulness matters to me (ALITERATION!) so it helped get me back into a very intentional space.

Next On Cosplay Corner:

I’m going to a CON! WOO HOO. This weekend I’m going to Garden State Comicfest: Atlantic City edition. I’ll be debuting a new cosplay! It’s all very exciting. AND a few forces have come together and I’ve decided to hit up Spring Dapper Day again this year. (WOOO!) I’m working on getting some bounds together for the even. (My Easter dress is gonna be a super cute Cinderella Bound for sho!) And even more exciting! One of those days I’ll be joined by my big bro and his girlfriend Megan. (Whether they bound or not is still be discussed, but they are going to dapper up!)

Cosplay Corner: March Disneybound Challenge: Week 3

You guys, a month is a long time, and it’s been a while since I’ve had to put this much though consistently into what I’m wearing. It’s fun, but it’s also, like, work.

Which is not to say I’m not still having a blast! I 100% am. Just, you know, if the outfits start to seem lazier, that would be the reason. (Also, I didn’t do laundry this week…)

Challenge

March 14th

Theme: The Little Mermaid

Character: Ariel

When I was talking about my influences with another writer friend once, I said flat out, “to be perfectly honest, I’d say the things that influenced me the most are Star Wars, The Princess Bride and The Little Mermaid.” (Dawson’s Creek comes right after that.) His answer was a caustic, “yeah, Reen, it shows!” Anyway, that’s why I went for this outfit, which is a take on the pretty pink princess dress Ariel wears after she gets her legs and Eric is all, “Hey, I’mma bring this hot silent girl to my house now.” (Their relationship is weird.) (I still love him.) (That’s why I named the visiting prince in The Marina Chronicle after him!) (My Eric also has a boat!) (My love of men with boats come from my preppy roots)

March 15th

Theme: Parks Attractions

Character(?): The Jungle Cruise

Oh, I was excited for this day. So excited. What was I going to do? Would I wear any of my various Haunted Mansion ensembles? Combine my wardrobe’s natural amount of purple and orange into some sort of Figment tribute? Toss some shine on some white as a tribute to Space Mountain? No no, for I realized, that my Peggy Carter cosplay has an excellent second use! I could look just like a skipper heading out on the jungle armed with only animal based puns!

March 16th

Theme: Mulan Characters

Character: Mushu

Mushu was easy for me, since I have a lot of gold tops (seriously, I don’t know how this happened.) and that red cardigan, so you know, it was done. I’m also wearing jeans, because did I mention that I didn’t do laundry? Ok, cool.

March 17th

Theme: Characters Who Wear/Are Green

Character: Louie Duck

This is not my best you guys, but whatever, it was St. Patrick’s day, and whatever I wore had to be comfortable/warm enough to wear walking around NYC for the parade. Thus, my Notre Dame Fighting Irish tee shirt and a black skirt and yellow leggings (like Duck feet). I wanted a hoodie, but couldn’t find one I liked in time. Very in line with our laziest triplet, no? (I also don’t have a picture)

March 18th

Theme: Villains

Character: Maleficent

Uhh, March 18 is a lazy day for me usually, so here, braids for the horns, purple and black. I also missed instagram for both this and Saturday. Eh. (Again no pics…sorry$

March 19th

Theme: Fantasia

Character: Ave Maria Light

I figured for Fantasia it was worth getting a bit creative and abstract. Schubert’s Ave Maria is easily one of my favorite pieces of music, and while as I kid I often fast forwarded through this segment of the film, I’ve really grown to appreciate it as an adult, especially as a stunning come down from the highs of the Night On Bald Mountain (which I also fast forwarded through a lot, because scary) I’m wearing a royal blue highlighted tunic, and holding an electric candle.

March 20th

Theme: Star Wars

Character: “Do I Have To Say His Name?” – Bruce Springsteen

I have so many versions of Poe Dameron that it seemed almost silly to even bother wearing it today, but I did. Orange dress, white vest. You know this one. If I didn’t have work, I’d maybe have gone for Ren Faire Poe, but you know, I did have work.

So that was this week! I got through it. I’ve got more snow coming (ICK!) which derailed some of my plans as I was hoping to go more springy for the coming week. But I’ll work around it!

Cosplay Corner: March Disneybound Challenge Week 1

Hey all! So as a way to keep updating in March (since I doubt I’ll read as many books as I did in February. Seriously, it gave me a really good cushion for meeting my goal of 30 books this year!) And as a way to actually get into the work I’m doing (self-care wise) with these Disneybounds, I figured I’d write them up!

Challenge

So, once a week, when I feel like it, I’ll document the ‘bounds I did the week before.

March 1st

Theme: Big Hero Six

Character: Honey Lemon

While I prefer Honey Lemon’s yellow dress look, I didn’t have anything that worked for that, and one of my goals with this month is not to buy things specifically for the bounds. My budget is a little tight lately, and I have SO MANY clothes.

Anyway, all this to say, I have this pink cotton dress and plenty of purple accents so I did her superhero look instead. I’m glad I did too, because seriously, this is a cute outfit that I’m gonna just start wearing more. Also it’s work appropriate! And very springy!

March 2nd

Theme: Disney Sidekicks

Character: Launchpad McQuack

Word of warning: I will be sneaking as much Duck Tales into this challenge as I possibly can. For sidekicks, I went with Launchpad. Green sweater, jeans, and my oversize tan blazer. I didn’t have an appropriate hat, but that’s OK by me.

March 3rd

Theme: Fab Five

Character: Donald Duck

I uh, phoned it in on this one, but mostly because I was cleaning my apartment, cooking and binge watching Inuyasha all day so “what am I wearing?” wasn’t on the top of my list. But I did wear my royal blue tank top, to pay tribute to our angriest and best duck!

March 4th

Theme: Zootopia

Character: Judy Hopps

Sunday, like Saturday, was a quiet day for me, but I at least went to church and grocery shopping so I wore jeans and a nice top. Grey and blue, perfect for our favorite bunny-cop!

March 5th

Theme: Peter Pan Characters

Character: Wendy Darling

I love Wendy. And I particularly love that she wears blue because I have a lot of it! This skirt and blouse look is an oldy but a goody. (The blouse is fairly new, but the skirt I’ve had since high school!) I think the blouse has a bit of a Victorian vibe to it, which works for Wendy, and the skirt is the perfect shade of blue.

March 6th

Theme: Marvel Characters

Character: Princess Shuri of Wakanda

WAKANDA FOREVER!!!!!!!! I genuinely can’t wait to search the tag for the challenge today to see all of the Shuris. Here’s my take on her. The purple dress is one of my favorite pieces I own, and I thought the tunic look of it, and the studs on the neck were very Wakanda, and I added the brown leggings and boots to match her belt in her battle outfit.

That’s this week! I’m having fun with the challenge and it’s helping me get organized and keeping me on top of my laundry.

Cosplay Corner: Disneybounding Rapunzel

You know how I said that I was done talking about the Disney trip? I LIED! No, honestly, I just forgot this was a post I wanted to do. And since it’s Halloween, it’s actually a very good day to do this one, where I break down the Rapunzel Disneybound I put together.

PhotoPass_Visiting_AK_404890555403

Rapunzel is my second favorite princess, after Cinderella. And I’m saving a Cinderella Disneybound for something special. (It involves mash ups…and other people. And the phrase Work!)

Rapunzel, however, can be on her own, or in combination with other people, so, here she is.

The decision to do Rapunzel came first, and then came the ears.

They came from an Etsy store called Cantina Traders, and I love them so much. They also got so many compliments, especially from cast members. (There’s a special point of pride for me when Cast Members compliment specific parts of my outfits.)

PhotoPass_Visiting_AK_404890555404

The tee shirt was another Etsy purchase, and the shorts came off of Amazon. (They are HUE brand. I’m a big fan of HUE, they have the best black tights, and I’ve found their leggings great too in the past. These shorts really worked out perfectly.)

I’m planning on wearing this one again while Juli, Dom and I are down there.

PhotoPass_Visiting_AK_404890555406 (1)

But I did do a fun Photopass shoot in this while we were leaving Animal Kingdom, so I thought I’d share those!

Cosplay Corner: A Galaxy Far Far Away

Hey guys! Remember that I sometimes do this? So, last week to gear up for Rogue One, I did some Star Wars themed closet cosplays, and I was really happy with how they came out!

I started off with Saturday and dressed as my favorite Star Wars character (before You Know Who showed up) Obi-Wan Kenobi. I love Obi-Wan for a lot of reasons, but mostly because he’s the best and you’ll never convince me otherwise. So, I wore a white tee shirt and brown leggings and a tan jacket, because Jedi wear robes.

obi-wan

The next day, Sunday, I had no intention of leaving the house, but I realized I had lounge ware that would let me channel Anakin Skywalker pretty well. I went with a black yoga pants, a brown tee shirt, and a black cardigan with grey trim. Poof! Instant Chosen One. (Brooding and Fall To The Dark Side not included.)

anakin

On Monday I was back at work, so I had to get a little more creative, as leggings and yoga pants based outfits were not really an option anymore. I realized though that with my brown skirt and cream fair isle sweater, I could easily channel Luke Skywalker. (Not pictured Uggs! I’m very much back into my Uggs this winter!) I feel like the sweater gets across the idea of Luke’s innocence very well and that’s like 80% of his character in the first movie.

luke

Tuesday I decided to go off the main movie path, and decided to dress up as Ahsoka. A maroon cardigan, like her clothes, an orange skirt, for her complection, grey leggings, like hers, and a blue scarf for her horns.

ahsoka

A LOT of planning went into this costume, which I think is appropriate as Ahsoka’s voice actress is a geek girl fashion icon.

ashley

Me with Ashley Ecksten at NYCC 2014! HerUniverse ALWAYS the best.

Wednesday was a little bit lazier, and it was time for Kylo Ren. Kylo’s easy, black sweater, black pants and a black scarf. I also wore red earrings to be his lightsaber. (I thought about it at least a little.

kylo

Thursday was movie day, and I was planning on wearing my Hoth Leia costume to the movie, but first I had my company’s Christmas party and these people don’t know me and also I wouldn’t wear a costume to a Christmas party. So, I needed to figure out a way to wear the base of the Leia costume, and have it be something else. Enter, the true hero R2-D2. Blue sweater with my white leggings. TA DA! My hair was in my Leia braids though, because those need to be done while my hair is wet.

r2

Anyway, that’s what I did to celebrate Star Wars!

Cosplay Corner: XOXO

This week, I decided to celebrate fall by picking a theme that really feels like fall to me, more than anything else. I don’t know why but there’s something eternally autumnal about Gossip Girl

Blair Waldorf

img_1327

I started off with the greatest character in the history of the world! Blair Waldorf. This was pretty easy, as I seriously went through a 2 year long phase where everything I bought was subjected to the “Would Blair Wear This? (if she would deign to shop in a mall in Scranton, PA)” But a lot of those clothes don’t fit me anymore, so there was an element of challenge to it.

Anyway, I went with a marroon mini skirt, black tights and a black tee shit. I added this gorgeous pearl bib necklace (A gift from Mary) and obviously a headband. This one is black with flowers made out of zippers. I wore black flats, because Blair was the queen of the ballet flat.

Jenny Humphrey

Jenny’s a tough approach as she had so many phases in look. I went with the season 1 “Little J” look, mostly because I had to go to work, and I didn’t feel like wearing all the eyeliner in the world. So, I wore grey tights, and a black long sleeve shirt under a white BCBG dress. I thought it looked very innocent and cute. I also did a side ponytail, because I seem to remember her doing her hair that way. I did throw on my combat boots though, as a slight nod to her punk era.

Nate Archibald

I settled on Nate for which boy to do, because I don’t quite have the style to pull Chuck off and Dan’s look is pretty boring. So, shrunken blazer with white trim, white tee shirt and black pants. I do not have floppy hair or perfect piercing blue eyes, but otherwise, I think it works.

Serena Vanderwoodsen

I was scoping out pintrest for ideas when I realized I recreate Serena’s outfit from the first few scenes of the show, so that’s what I did. Jeans, Frye boots, black and white striped shirt, scarf and brown leather jacket (man, that thing has come in handy). All set to jump off a train in Grand Central station and go see my suicidal younger brother, plus jumpstart all of the drama in the world!

Alright friends, that’s all I’ve got for today! Next week, it’s time for New York Comic Con!!!! I’m really excited about it and I hope to see everyone there!

XOXO Fangirl

Cosplay Corner: WORK!

Hey all, Renn Faire got bumped again. (I was able to take pictures this time, but, well, something came up.)

What did happen this week was that I saw Hamilton. So, I decide to pay tribute to it via my closet cosplay this week, and…because of Lora, I’ve very much felt the need to up my game.

I decided the Schuyler sisters were the best way to go, so let’s start.

Angelica Schuyler

This is what I wore on Tuesday to the show. So, I went with a black flippy skirt, a pink tank top with some macrame on top.

I decided to do some focus on jewelry for these in a big way. Angelica got some Tory Burch style earrings (You just know that the Schuyler sisters would be preps.)  and a necklace that was a gift from my friend Cha that says, “Nothing is impossible to a determined woman.”

I wore my riding boots (again prep!) because they also look straight out of the Hamilton costume closet.

Eliza Schuyler

Eliza felt the need to be softer and a little more traditional than Angelica. So, I went with a breezy blue crop top and my pencil skirt, super feminine and very sweet. I also did combat boots though, because she’s sweet but also tough as nails.

Eliza’s jewelry is my oversized pearl earrings and a small necklace with a blue stone and pendant that says “ma soeur” (my sister in French) that my sister got me for Christmas a few years ago.

Peggy Schuyler

Peggy’s the yellow one! Anyway, for Peggy I wore a yellow peasant top and jeans and my frye boots. Again, I’m pushing the prep factor.

Peggy’s jewelry is a pair of stone set earrings and a blue a yellow colored glass pendant that my uncles gave me for Christmas one year and a yellow wooden bangle.

Anyway, that’s what I did this week. I had a lot of fun with it.
